Unbeknownst to The Boy, Mum and Dad had spent a few days secretly packing suitcases and gathering buckets, sun cream and all sorts of exciting 'going away' sundries. It was time for a surprise holiday! After loading up the car, they went to The Boy's school and picked him up after a relaxed, non-uniform last day of being a Year 7.
Mum managed to get him out a little earlier than expected, and when they were all in the car, Cliff Richards' 'Summer Holiday' was played at some volume.
Here's The Boy, on realising that we weren't actually going home.
The journey was long. Veeeeeeeeeeeeery long. The Boy eventually guessed where they were all going and Mum and Dad had agreed to confirm his guess if he got it right. Once the excitement had subsided enough, Mum fetched out The Boy's new car journey present to help pass the time. Loom bands!
The loom bands were quite fiddly, but The Boy enjoyed playing with them.
A good supply of books was also to hand. The Boy does love books.
Eventually the fun day at school and the journey got the better of The Boy and he had a good snooze.
Yes, a _really_ good snooze. One of those supersnoozes where things stick to one's face.
Besides the usual traffic, Dad spotted this really cool car with a Dragonball Z design. Oooo fancy!
They made a pitstop at Burger King where Mum had a REAL cheeseburger thanks to her magic tablets. Yummmm! And then they were off again, for more hours of road. Thankfully Dad had burned ten CDs of songs to listen to on the way down. Many a foot was tapped and song sung.
Finally they reached the lovely village of Rock which sits on the bank of the Camel Estuary opposite the popular harbour town of Padstow.
There they were!
The holiday homes in Rock are very big and expensive and The Family were all very lucky to have been invited to join Granny, Dave, Alex, Thom and Baby Gwen for a week! The house they stay in was named 'Tamarisk' and it was big, homely, comfortable and very welcoming after such a long drive.
Cue lots of smiling faces and greetings and pleasantries as everyone met and chattered excitedly. And then it was off to choose a room! Mum and Dad chose the twin room at the top. It was full of character with slopey walls, lots of storage, a super en suite bathroom and skylight windows for star-gazing. They pushed the beds together for the ummmm together-factor. Awwww.
The Boy chose a nice room downstairs with a view of the estuary and then suitcases and bags and buckets were all fetched and carried and unpacked. Beds were made, clothes hung and nooks and crannies were explored.
The view from the landing window.
Everyone was very tired from journeying down to Rock and bedtime was most welcome!
