A Weekend in Beddgelert - The Exploration Episode

Mum and Dad woke up in their tent to another sunny day.  They weren't too sure what to do with the day so they decided to have breakfast, pack up the tent and see how things were after that.  Mum went for a nice shower to wash off the grime from the day before and Dad went to fetch the morning bread.  Mum thought he looked like a little French garçon when he came back with the baguettes.  They were eagerly devoured with the bacon that Mum sat and cooked.

Most of the packing was done in the warm sunshine, but just as the tent was coming down it started to spitspot with rain.  Luckily it didn't turn heavy until Mum and Dad and all of the camping gear were safely in the car and on their way to check out.  They thanked the campsite owners for a lovely stay and made their way out of Beddgelert and its beautiful mountainous landscapes.

Even though it was raining, they thought they might try and find the beach that the man had recommended in the pub the evening before.  So it was off to Porthmadog, the long but scenic way round!  It wasn't very hard to find Borth-y-Gest and it didn't take long to park in the little harbour there.  They waited out a short but heavy shower of rain before making their way along the coastal path towards the beach.

Looking out into the estuary from the harbour.

Mum loves this photo of Dad looking across the estuary near the man-made, aptly-named The Old Lookout.

The beach at Borth-y-Gest, Dad loved the little sandy peninsula.

They found their way down to the beach and took a stroll on the peninsula.  Within three minutes it had closed in and they had to hastily remove their socks and shoes and paddle back to the beach.  The water was lovely so Mum had an extra gleeful paddle.

The harbour and mountains from the end of the peninsula.

Even though Porthmadog was beautifully sunny, Mum thought it was probably still raining in Beddgelert.

Mum and Dad's footprints in the sand and the encroaching tide in the distance.

Dad cleaned his sandy feet in a pool and left them to dry before putting his shoes and socks back on.  Dad doesn't like having sandy feet.

In the pool there were hundreds of small fish.  Yam and The Boy would have loved it!

They made their way back to the car and Mum asked if they might go to Criccieth to explore a bit since it was very close and there was still plenty of day left.  Dad thought it was a good idea so they set off.

It wasn't long until they arrived at Criccieth and found a car park with a nice shady tree to park under.  Mum changed into her £5 shorts since it looked like the sunshine would be around for the rest of the day.  They bought some sandwiches and crisps from a local ice cream parlour and headed up to Criccieth Castle to sit and eat them.

The castle was high up on the cliffs and the views from it were fantastic!

This is where Mum and Dad sat and ate their little picnic.

A view from the castle walls.  Apparently Harlech castle can be seen on a clear day.

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOM.....Oh look, there it is!  Mum also used the binoculars a lot.

Castles are big things and Mum and Dad were too close to it to fit it all into one photograph.

Being held prisoner here surely wouldn't have been too bad, would it?  Not with these views!

Wooooo, a picture postcard photograph of Criccieth and its beach.  Lovely!

We had a wonderful time in Criccieth and enjoyed learning about the history of the castle.  But all things come to an end and it was time to head home for a good rest before collecting The Boy from his own little holiday.

Mum and Dad managed to avoid seeing the football scores and caught up with the Holland v Cost Rica match on iPlayer when they got home.  They had had a very active time over the weekend and it was very nice for them to put their feet up and flob around for a bit.

The Boy was very pleased to see Mum and Dad when they picked him up from the caravan park.  He had been doing lots of activities and looked tired but happy.  They all had just enough energy left to pop and see The Boy's 'Toad City' before heading home. The Family, all together again *happy*

Despite the rain and the midges on the first day, Mum and Dad had a fabulous camping trip and would love to get a bigger tent and go camping more often with The Boy.  They also discovered that the Porthmadog part of Wales isn't too far at all for a nice day out.
